Location: The Aero Theatre, 1328 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica, CA 90403
Description: The American Cinematheque presents the latest incarnation of its perennial Halloween event - an all-night marathon featuring half a dozen horror films, between-film free food (including coffee - thank god!), giveaways, trailers, crazy shorts and surprises! Is there a better way to celebrate Halloween in Los Angeles?
This year's titles include HELLRAISER, MOTEL HELL, THE DEVIL'S RAIN, CHRISTINE, and the MANITOU. Our personal favorite of the bunch is THE LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE, one of the few movies inspired by 1968's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD that has managed to achieve enough stature to stand beside Romero's film.
The 7th Annual Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorthon is only one piece of the American Cinematheque's 2012 Halloween Horror Events. Check out other screenings at the links at the bottom of this page.
HELLRAISER. 25th Anniversary! 1987, New World Pictures, 94 min. Dir. Clive Barker. In this first film in the HELLRAISER franchise, an antique puzzle box brought from Morocco to London unleashes a race of Cenobites, who love nothing more than inflicting pain on human beings. With his feature directorial debut, Clive Barker joined such filmmakers as Wes Craven and Sam Raimi among the ranks of horror’s most reliable autuers, and lead Cenobite “Pinhead” - his face pierced by dozens of needles - joined the ranks of genre’s most recognizable monsters. Starring Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins and Ashley Laurence.
MOTEL HELL, 1980, MGM/Park Circus, 101 min. Dir. Kevin Connor. And you thought the Bates Motel was a place to avoid! The blood-and guts horror spawned by PSYCHO reaches its logical and hilarious conclusion here, as Farmer Vincent (Rory Calhoun) turns unsuspecting tourists into the tastiest meat in the county. With Wolfman Jack as Reverend Billy.
THE DEVIL’S RAIN, 1975, 86 min. Mark Preston (William Shatner) possesses a powerful ancient book sought by Satanic cult leader Jonathan Corbis (the late Ernest Borgnine) and heads for a desert ghost town to try to beat the devil in a battle of faith. Director Robert Fuest (THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES) enlisted real-life Satanist Anton LaVay as technical advisor on this occult thriller, which also features Tom Skerritt, Eddie Albert and a young John Travolta.
CHRISTINE, 1983, Sony Repertory, 110 min. Horror heavyweight John Carpenter directed and co-composed the music for this adaptation of Stephen King's novel about a 1958 Plymouth possessed by evil. Nerdy teen Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon) buys and restores an auto against the better judgment of buddy Dennis (John Stockwell), and as the killer car dispatches its victims, it gradually transforms its owner into a '50s-style delinquent. With Harry Dean Stanton and Kelly Preston.
THE LIVING DEAD OF MANCHESTER MORGUE (aka LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE), 1974, Blue Underground, 95 min. Dir. Jorge Grau. This Spanish-Italian production, released internationally under more than a dozen titles, is set in the English countryside, where an experimental machine designed to kill insects has the unintended effect of reviving dead humans. The zombies nearly get Ray Lovelock and Cristina Galbó, and local police sergeant Arthur Kennedy is of no help to the two travelers - he blames them for the rash of homicides.
THE MANITOU, 1978, Rialto Pictures, 104 min. Dir. William Girdler. Gonzo 1970s drive-in movie madness, with Susan Strasberg as a young woman who has a 400-year-old medicine man growing out of her back. Tony Curtis stars as a bogus spiritualist who comes face-to-face with the midget demon, with the help of New Age midwife Michael Ansara. Must be seen to be believed.
Special Horrorthon prices: General $20, Student/Senior $18, Members $15 - includes all-night snacks.
