Description: As part of the Cinefamily’s “VIVE L’AMOUR” series, Jean-Pierre Jenuet’s wonderful fantasy-romance screens on a double bill with the somewhat more down-to-Earth JULES AND JIM. Although essentially a love story, Jenuet’s visuals create a sort of romantic fantasy-land that lands this film in the genre; purists may quibble, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the film.
From the website:
After the dark, dystopian slapstick of Delicatessen and the even darker, surrealist stunner The City Of Lost Children, director Jean-Pierre Jeunet switched gears and made what might be the ultimate feel-good movie of the 21st century! Set in a storybook Paris of the imagination, Amelie spins the sweetly inventive story of one of cinema’s most beloved introverts; as she traverses the mythical worlds of her daydreams and gets tripped up in romantic reality, Amelie becomes matchmaker and guardian angel for the vivid cast of eccentrics who make up her world, and discovers her own fantastic destiny in the process. Adorned with whimsical, often subliminal special effects that paint Paris as a postcard vision of the fondly-remembered past merged seamlessly with the modern age, Amelie will make you want to scheme to do something nice for a stranger, do backflips while a little doggy runs in place on your stomach, steal a lawn gnome or two, and dream of a life lived in dreams!
Dir. Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001, 35mm, 122 min.
