John Carpenter Double Bill at the New Beverly

The New Beverly presents a double bill of John Carpenter films from the 1980s: Big Trouble In Little China and They Live. The first is a fantasy-adventure modeled after Fant-Asia films; the other a piece of paranoid science fiction. Neither ranks among the filmmaker’s very best work, but both are worth seeing, especially for fans.

Big Trouble In Little China: 1986, USA, 99 minutes, dir. John Carpenter, starring Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, James Hong, Victor Wong, Peter Kwong. Sun: 7:30 only; Mon/Tue: 7:30.

They Live: 1988, USA, 93 minutes, dir. John Carpenter, starring Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster, George ‘Buck’ Flower, Peter Jason, Sun: 9:30 only; Mon/Tue: 9:30. Variety called this one a “fantastically subversive film, a nifty little confection pitting us vs them, the haves vs the have-nots.”
