Big Ugly Fish

“Big Fish swimming down low, down on the bottom where nobody goes…”

This souvenir “Frownder Mug,” available at the Black Lagoon Popup Bar in Long Beach, got us thinking about Delaney Davidson’s eerie song, “Big Ugly Fish.” Presumably, the mug is supposed to look like an angler fish, but from this angle it more resembles a zombified human.

What’s that got to do with “Big Ugly Fish”? The song is about a guy trying to catch a sort of legendary fish that his grandfather tossed back after taking one horrified look at it. The climactic revelation is almost Lovecraftian in its creepiness, which leaves the listener trying to sort out the implications.

Spoiler (sort of) below:

“Those eyes! Those eyes! They was grandpa’s ugly eyes!”

What are we supposed to make of this? Does the story take place in Innsmouth?
