Labyrinth – 8:00pm-ish
This wickedly whimsical fable features a fantasy world so chock-full of outrageous puppet goblins and creatures that it could only be lorded over by the Duke of Sexy himself, Davie Bowie. Highly memorable, iconic and slightly kinky as Jareth The Goblin King, Bowie battles with spoiled brat Sarah (Jennifer Connolly), who’s thrust into a reality where everything seems possible, nothing is as it seems, and her goal is to outsmart the Goblin King in order to rescue herself and her baby brother. An irresistible explosion of eye candy from the mind of Jim Henson, Labyrinth is a phantasmagorical shindig that’s still as much fun as ever! Dir. Jim Henson, 1986, 35mm, 101 min.
Return To Oz – 10:00pm-ish
A jarring, yet still enrapturous fairy tale, Return To Oz is at once a lovely crystal vision and a fractured dive into dark waters. Picking up where the beloved classic 1930s telling of “The Wizard of Oz” left off, Return is a complete 180, giving us Oz from the other side of the mirror: musty, barren, spooky — and yet still entirely bewitching. Little lady Dorothy (Fairuza Balk) is launched into a delightfully frightening bizarro Oz kingdom inhabited by spindly creatures, grungy decay and possibly the most iconically unsettling villainess in fantasy film. Return To Oz, with its haunting sense of foreboding dread, traumatized an entire generation of unsuspecting young girls babysat by cable TV and VCRs — and we all fucking love it to this day. Dir. Walter Murch, 1985, digital presentation, 113 min.
