FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2018 11:59pm: THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991, dir by Jonathan Demme; 35mm, Park Circus, USA)
Was anyone prepared for the strange combination of intense character study and truly stomach-churning horror Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Ted Levine, and Jonathan Demme were able to generate in the landmark horror classic The Silence of the Lambs?
To this day, one of the only horror movies to win the Best Picture Academy Award (along with Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Director), The Silence of the Lambs is a kind of horrific Alice in Wonderland in which Alice is an FBI agent who must determine the identity of a serial killer by forcing herself to have conversations with a Mad Hatter who may be infatuated with her and want to eat her. All the sensational stuff of lesser horror movies-grisly murders, cannibalism, the female lead in jeopardy, the grotesque killer-are all turned on their heads here so that you marvel that you actually almost sympathize with the monsters while understanding all along you should get nowhere close to them.
Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins turn in career best performances in this movie. And it may be argued that this is Jonathan Demme’s single most perfect movie.
