Fabio Frizzi to tour USA with “Composer Cut” of The Beyond
Italian soundtrack composer Fabio Frizzi is set to embark on a North American tour in November, performing music from such cult horror films as Zombie 2 (1979), City of the Living Dead (1980), The Beyond (1981), and The House by the Cemetery (1981). The first stop is in Memphis, Tennessee on November 15; the final stop is in Atlanta, Georgia on December 20. Along the way, Frizzi will perform at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on December 9; tickets go on sale Friday, October 18.
Shows will begin with a live-to-film performance of the “Composer’s Cut” of score for The Beyond, which was recently restored for release on vinyl and CD by Cadabra Records after Frizzi uncovered unused music cues from the film. This complete version of the soundtrack had its west coast premiere early in October at Beyond Fest. The second set will offer a selection of the composer’s work for Beyond-director Lucio Fulici, titled “Frizzi 2 Fulci,” which will feature scenes from the films alongside the music.
“The definitive mix of a movie is a difficult matter in which [everyone’s] ideas flow and where the director has to create the right balance under his artistic view,” Fulci stated via press release. “For the new composer’s cut, I found my old notes taken with Lucio and many of the scenes that I newly scored contain the original, unused music cues…It is basically a new reading of that movie. I tried to do the work imagining Lucio sitting beside me. The true Beyond is always the one dated 1981, but I hope this new one will be a pleasant experience for all of those who loved that one.”
Frizzi has had a long career in Italian cinema, scoring dozens of movies – he even collaborated with members of Goblin on tracks used in the 1976 film Perché Si Uccidono – but perhaps his most memorable work was for Lucio Fulci, whose directorial approach deliberate eschewed narrative coherence in favor of atmosphere interrupted by gruesome episodes of graphic horror, creating a sort of nightmare universe in which logic had been disrupted by dark forces beyond human comprehension. Frizzi’s music added a layer of dread that matched the visual insanity.
For his horror scores, Frizzi employed synthesizer lines over repetitive bass riffs and drumbeats, creating a mesmerizing effect, somewhat in the style of Goblin, but he also utilized orchestral elements to sinister effect, particularly in The Beyond, which augments eerie mellotron tonalities with real strings and wind instruments. To recreate the music live, Frizzi will be accompanied by a seven-piece orchestra.
