Director Benh Zeitlin’s feature-film debut was one of the most talked about films at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize. Zeitlin adapted the play Juicy and Delicious along with the play’s author, Lucy Alibar, and created an atmospheric and unique epic vision of life and survival in the American South. As flood waters lash the bayou where young Hushpuppy (Quvenzhanè Wallis) lives with her father, Wink (Dwight Henry). As hurricane winds and rains batter her home, she takes to the rising waves in a bathtub, pitting herself against the elements and the primordial, tusk-bearing creatures known as aurochs. Zeitlin and his crew, including the inventive cinematographer Ben Richardson, create a landscape that is mythic and incredibly real. There’s nothing else quite like it; it’s a low budget epic, and the then five-year-old Wallis is a natural and proud camera subject. Between Zeitlin and his young star, this must be one of the most impressive and exciting feature debuts in American film history.
