Giallo (Yellow) Tribute to Mario Bava

Arrow in the Head pointed me to this short film called “Yellow,” which is a tribute to the style of the late Italian horror filmmaker Mario Bava.

Bava inaugurated a new kind of horror-thriller-mystery-crime film called “Giallo” (i.e., “yellow,” named after the cover color of cheaply printed mystery novels) that came to involve elaborate stylistic excess, including mobile camerawork and exaggerated colors.

This short little film, written and directed by Semih Tareen for the Seattle Film Institute, captures the feel quite nicely. Your enjoyment might be enhanced if you’re familiar with the form, so that you can recognize the elements of homage. Check it out either way.
