Nightmare: A Haunted Attraction

Nightmare: A Haunted Attraction was a multi-maze walk-through haunted house, which ran at the Pomona Fairplex from 2009 to 2011. Unlike most haunts, Nightmare: A Haunted Attraction offered their scares in large, wide-open spaces (located in the fair’s Big Red Barn). This lent a different feel to the experience – less claustrophobic, more wide open, with ample opportunity to see approaching threats. Though not recommended for children under 13, the intensity level was relatively low (there was plenty of maneuvering room to circumvent the monsters); the experience was generally more fun than terrifying. Though relatively low-tech in terms of technical effects, Nightmare: A Haunted Attraction had a sense of scale that most haunted house attractions lack, with lots of room for large set pieces, such as pirate ships and city gates.

Nightmare: A Haunted Attraction at Fairplex replaced Fearplex after the death of that haunt’s owner, Bob Koritzke. Originally named Nightmare at Scareview Farms, the event made its debut in 2009 with three mazes: Pirates of the Dead Seas, The Vampire’s Vault, and the Haunted Cattle Barn. For 2010, the event (renamed Nightmare: A Haunted Attraction) expanded to five mazes: The Bride of the Pitchfork, Cleopatra’s Tomb, Transylvanian Terror, Skull Island, and Zombies of the Grave. Their final season also featured five mazes: The Wicked West, The Amazing Orloff and His Circus of Freaks, Pichfork’s Butcher Barn, Zombies Unleashed, and Transylvanian Terror.

The quality of of the haunt remained consistent from year to year, with just enough additions and adjustments to keep it fresh. Despite mazes including “pitchfork” in their names, the gore level was low – this was definitely not on par with Uncle Willy’s Slaughterhouse at the Knott’s Berry Farm Halloween Haunt.

Nightmare: A Haunted Attraction at Fairplex retired after the Halloween 2011 season.
