Presented by the San Fernando Valley Historical Society and the Los Angeles Mission College Drama Club, this fund-raising Halloween event was part historical tour and part immersive theatrical experience; with actors portraying the ghosts of the dead interred in Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, this was essential a series of monologues recounting real-life incidents from the past. The emphasis was on history rather than horror, albeit with a spooky atmosphere.
History:
The Voices of Pioneer Cemetery made its debut in 2010 with a “Flashlight Ghost Tour” (reviewed here), which raised funds to help the Historical Society find and identify some of the old graves. After this goal was accomplished, the San Fernando Valley Historical Society put the haunt on hiatus for 2011 and 2012, but resurrected a brand new incarnation for 2013: “Almas: A Day of the Dead Celebration.” The event went on hiatus again in 2014, with no word so far on when or whether it will return.
