Pioneer Cemetery, 14451 Bledsoe Street, Sylmar, CA 91342
Presented by the San Fernando Valley Historical Society and the Los Angeles Mission College Drama Club, this fund-raising Halloween event took visitors through a historical cemetery, with actors portraying the ghosts of the dead interred there. The emphasis was on history rather than horror, albeit with a spooky atmosphere.
The Voices of Pioneer Cemetery Flashlight Ghost Tour made its debut in 2010 to raise funds for the Pioneer Cemetery (obtaining money to find/identify some of the old graves). Described as “Pageant of the Masters meets Dracula,” the spooky walk provided a history of Pioneer Cemetery and its inhabitants, as recounted by the souls of those interred therein. After this goal was accomplished, the San Fernando Valley Historical Society put the haunt on hiatus for 2011 and 2012, but resurrected a brand new incarnation for 2013: “Almas: A Day of the Dead Celebration.”
The event went on hiatus again in 2014, with no word so far on whether it will return.
