Hollywood Cemetery Tour later this month

In honor of the Halloween season, Art Deco Society of Los Angeles will conduct guided walking tours of Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Saturday, October 22.

Starting at 10:00am. tours will leave every fifteen minutes from the fountain inside the main gate.

Cost is $13 per person. There is ample parking inside the main gate.

Reservations for groups of six or more are available by calling 310-659-3326.

Just to be clear: this is a real cemetery, not a “scary” haunt in a mock cemetery. Still, this seems the perfect season for the tour, and being an old-fashioned graveyard, the place does have an undeniably appropriate atmosphere for Halloween.

I went on one of the tours a little over ten years ago and found it to be worth the time and money. It helps if you’re interested in Hollywood history, because much of the tour deals with the accomplishments of those buried there. The historic cemetery is the final resting place for many of the movie industry’s most famous pioneers: stars, directors, and moguls who made Hollywood what it is.

But even if you’re not particularly fascinated by old Hollywood stories, the cemetery itself is of undoubted interest. There is an impressive array of architectural styles (Victorian, Egyptian Revival, and of course Art Deco), and as the Art Deco society puts it, “Every tombstone tells a story.”

Location: Hollywood Forever Cemetery – 6000 Santa Monica Blvd at Gower in Hollywood
