IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA is one of several enjoyable black-and-white monster movies featuring stop-motion special effects by Ray Harryhausen. It’s not exactly a great movie (the antiquated 1950s attitude toward women, including a scene wherein the old school macho sea captain gets a lesson about the so-called “New Woman” is pretty hysterical), but it is pretty well done for modestly budgeted effort. Of course, the highlight is Harryhausen’s work; famously, he saved money by making an octopus with only six tentacles, but you really can’t tell from watching the film.
IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA screens as part of Fangoria’s Midnight Madness series.
