This year, it seems as if IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE has eclipsed A CHRISTMAS CAROL as the go-to Christmas classic. Frank Capra's 1946 film is playing no less than seven engagements around town during the month of December (not counting a previous November engagement at the Bay Theatre that extended to December 1). The leader in this regard is Arclight Cinemas, which is presenting four separate screenings (one at each of their fine locations). Also getting in on the act, the American Cinematheque presents two screenings, one each at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
For those who don't know, the story has George Bailey (Stewart) spending his entire life giving up his big dreams for the good of his town, Bedford Falls, as we see in flashback. But in the present, on Christmas Eve, he is broken and suicidal over the misplacing of an $8000 loan and the machinations of the evil millionaire, Mr. Potter (Barrymore). His guardian angel, Clarence (Travers), falls to Earth, literally, and shows him how his town, family, and friends would turn out if he had never been born. George meant so much to so many people; should he really throw it all away?
