Joe Dante Series at New Beverly

Starting on Wednesday, August 5, the New Beverly Cinema will present a series of screenings featuring personal appearances by director Joe Dante. Films on the schedule include several directed by Dante himself (THE BURBS, MATINEE, GREMLINS), plus some of his favorites from other filmmakers (Roger Corman’s 1957 sci-fi flick NOT OF THIS EARTH, Steve De Jarnatt’s 1988 apocalyptic love story, MIRACLE MILE). The series wraps up on Thursday, August 13 with a double bill of the adventure film THE LAST VALLEY (1970) and William Sterling’s 1972 adaptation of ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND.

Title: The ‘Burbs
Description: Director Joe Dante and star Bruce Dern will appear in person to discuss their 1989 black comedy film about a neighborhood up in arms over the new (and possibly homicidal) neighbors – who make the Addams Family look normal. On a double bill with 1975’s SMILE.
Dates: Wednesday- Thursday, August 5-6

Title: St. Valentine’s Day Massacre & Not of This Earth
Description: Joe Dante and Roger Corman will appear in person for this double bill of films produced and directed by Corman. The first is a 1967 gangster epic; the second is a 1957 sci-fi opus.
Dates: Friday, August 7 at 7:30pm

Title: The Movie Orgy
Description: Joe Dante will appear in person for a screening of his 1968 compliation of old movie clips and trailers, including footage from such cult items as ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN.
Date: Saturday, August 8 at 5:30pm

Title: Gremlins
Description: A 25th anniversary screening of Joe Dante’s hit horror-comedy, starring Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates in a small town overrun by mischievous monsters on Christmas Eve.
Date: Saturday, August 8 at midnight

Title: Matinee & Miracle Mile
Description: Joe Dante will appear in person for the evening screenings of his 1993 film MATINEE, which plays on a double bill with one of his favorite movies by another filmmaker, MIRACLE MILE (1988). MATINEE is about a huckster filmmaker (John Goodman) out to promote his latest sci-fi flick (titled “Mant” – half man, half ant, all terror). MIRACLE MILE is a love story set against the backdrop of Los Angeles about to be nuked.

Title: Cold Turkey & The President’s Analyst
Description: Joe Dante will appear in person to present a pair of his favorite films.
Dates: Thursday-Friday, August 11 & 12

Title: The Last Valley & Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Description: The New Beverly Cinema wraps up its Joe Dante series with 1972 film version of Lewis’ Carol’s fantasy classic, playing on the bottom half of a double bill with the 1970 adventure film. Joe Dante will appear in person to introduce the flms.
