L.A. Times Festival of Books – This Weekend

This weekend, the Los Angeles Times presents their annual Festival of Books. This is not a genre-specific event, but fans of science fiction, fantasy, and horror will find plenty to wet their appetite. Among the schedule authors are Clive Barker, Ray Bradbury, Joe Haldeman, Harry Harrison, and Robert Silverberg.

There will be a Science Fiction: Grand Masters panel at 12:30pm on Saturday, moderated by Scott Timberg, with Haldeman, Harrison, and Silverberg. Clive Barker will appear at 2:00pm on Saturday, interviewed by Gina McIntyre.

Panels are free, but you do need to get tickets ahead of time in order to guarantee your seat.Advance tickets are available at Tickemaster locations. If tickets run out, you can wait in the will-call line and hope some ticket-holders do not show up.

Besides the panels, several exhibitors have outdoor stages where authors appear, and many of them will be signing their books. This year’s exhibitors include Mystery Writers of America, Battle for Terra, Disney-Pixar.

Also, the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books is filled with booths operated by bookstores from Los Angeles, many of them independent specialty stores that focus on genre fiction, making this a perfect opportunity to sample all their wares in one place. We expect to see Kinokuniya, Dark Delicacies, Small World (which has a great selection of mystery and vampire fiction), and many others.

Tickets are free. Parking is $9.

Beware: parking is difficult, and you will probably have to walk quite a distance from the lot to the campus – and the campus is big. Consider taking the bus or using the shuttle service.

Location: The campus of the University of California in Los Angeles – Westwood, California – 405 Hilgard Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90095. Click here for a map
