Musical Ghost & Mrs. Muir returning from the dead?

Way back in 2005, Hollywood Gothique’s very first theatre review was of the wonderful musical version of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, staged at the NoHo Arts Center in North Hollywood. The show was so enchanting – great story and great songs – that we  expected to see full-scale Broadway version materialize in the next couple years. Instead, there were only crickets chirping in the graveyard, as if the play had been buried after its final NoHo performance. Now we here there is hope for a revival.

Essentially the reason for the play’s disappearance is haggling over rights to the source material, which prevented The Ghost and Mrs. Muir from from a planned opening in Boston after its debut in North Hollywood. There is nothing definite yet, but there has been a change or two among the behind-the-scenes participants, which could pave the way for an agreement that would resurrect the show.

Let’s all say a prayer or wish upon a star that this should come to pass. We cannot begin to convey how much this work deserves a wider audience, but this may put it in perspective: a few weeks after The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, we attended the blockbuster hit Wicked at the Pantages in Hollywood, and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir was far, far more grand in every aspect.
