Description: The American Cinematheque presents a 50th anniversary screening of the 1961 science-fiction-adventure film; the event doubles as the launch of the new Blu-ray disc, which features a digitally restored transfer.
The legendary Ray Harryhausen provided stop-motion special effects, bringing to life giant crabs, bees, and sea creatures, in this loose adaptation of the Jules Verne novel (a sequel to 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, which tells us what ultimately happened to Captain Nemo). The plot follows Confederate soldiers who escape from a Civil War prison camp by using an enemy balloon; unfortunately for them, a storm blows them onto the titular island, where they encounter not only super-sized creatures and but also the enigmatic captain of the Nautilus (Herbert Lom). Directed by Cy Endfield, with a magnificent score by Bernard Herrmann.
