Recommendation: A Clockwork Orange & The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie

In case you have not been digging through are new Events Calendar, I wanted to point out that A Clockwork Orange and The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie are coming to the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica on July 23. The former is Stanley Kubrick’s controversial adaptation of Anthony Burgess’s novel, about a futuristic world in which a young “droog” indulges in sex and ultra-violence until a fascist state brainwashes him. The latter is Luis Bunel’s Oscar-winning piece of surrealism in which some upper-class hypocrites find that everything that can go wrong, does go wrong – which might not sound like something that belongs in Hollywood Gothique, but the film is sprinkled with some decidedly ghastly horror imagery, including two ghost stories that take the forms of either dreams or flashbacks – eerie, spooky stuff that stands comfortably beside the best Mario Bava gothic tales.
