Benjamin Christiansen’s excellent silent docu-drama about the history of belief in witchcraft screens as part of the series “The Witching Hour: Three Screenings Co-curated by Francesca Gabbiani.” Although it gets off to a slow start (the first section feels like a filmed lecture), this is an absolutely incredible film that uses dramatic re-enactments to illustrate belief in devils and sorcery, along with the witch trails that resulted from these beliefs. Though a documentary, the result is definitely a horror movie, filled with incredible imagery that you don't expect from a "classic" (writer-director Christiansen plays the devil, whose followers literally kiss his ass during a witches' sabbath).
