Simonetti’s Goblin begins U.S. tour

Claudio Simonetti (2nd from right)

Claudio Simonetti, whose work with Goblin set the tone for for Italian horror soundtracks in the ’70s and ’80s, is launching his U.S. tour this weekend, which will bring him to The Palace Theatre in Los Angeles on Friday, September 30. Heading his group “Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin,” the keyboardist will perform the soundtrack to Dario Argento’s 1975 giallo horror film Deep Red, synched live to the film. The second half of the show will feature a set of Goblin’s greatest hits, plus material from his 2019 album, The Devil Is Back.

As a group member and a solo artist, Simonetti has scored dozens of horror films, including Suspiria (1977), Dawn of the Dead (1979), and Dario Argento’s Dracula. A founding member of Goblin, he left the group in the late ’70s, rejoining with other former members to work on Tenebrae in 1982 and Phenomena in 1985. 2001’s Non ho sonno (a.k.a. Sleepless) was the first time all four original members of Goblin had recorded together in decades. Since then, Simonetti has performed with in various permutations of the band, under names such as New Goblin and Goblin Keys. He is the only original member in Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin, which contains performers from his solo off-shoot band, Daemonia. (Four other members of Goblin had planned a U.S. which would have brought them to West Hollywood’s Whiskey A Go-Go on November 13; unfortunately, the tour was cancelled “due to health issues for one of the members of the band.”)

Via press release, Simonetti commented on his tour: “After the great success of our 2018 US tour, it is a great pleasure for me to announce our next tour in the United States and Canada with my band Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin, where we will present the Dario Argento’s film ‘Deep Red/Profondo Rosso’ for the first time in US, with the soundtrack played live during the screening of the film. At the conclusion of the film we will also play the classics from Argento and George Romero soundtracks and many more, including some excerpts from our new album ‘The Devil Is Back'”
