Sunset Boulevard at Nuart

Conventional wisdom pegs this classic 1950 Oscar-winning classic as a drama; however, horror fans need not look hard to see that it is laced with Gothic acoutrements: Gloria Swanson plays a former silent film star, secluded in her brooding mansion (substituting for Castle Dracula), who is a figurative if not literal vampire, sucking the life out of a young, down on his luck screenwriter played by William Holden, who winds up in her lair when his car breaks down while he is evading creditors. There are no obvious scares, but SUNSET BOULEVARD remains a somber, disturbing work with all the atmosphere of a true horror film.
