Description: The Clubfoot Orchestra provides scores for the silent films SHERLOCK JR and THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI. The former is a comedy starring Buster Keaton; the later is perhaps the great-granddaddy of the horror genre, a 1919 German Expressionist movie about a sideshow mesmerist who sends his somnambulist (the great Conrad Veidt) out to kidnap a beautiful woman.
From the website:
The show opens with the animated short “Felix the Cat Woos Whoopee” (1929, Otto Mesmer. 6 min.)
6:30 pm: Sherlock Jr (dir. Buster Keaton, 1924. 45 min. ) Incredible stunts, Outrageous gags! Experimental Filmmaking! Primitive American Surrealism!
8:00pm: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (dir. Robert Weine, 1919. 55 min.) The first Expressionist film and is often considered one of the most influential movies of all time. Dreamlike plot and nightmarish sets.
“Club Foot Orchestra has pioneered the modern use of live music with silent film. This nine-piece ensemble flawlessly performed a score carefully matched to every piece of on-screen action in what amounts to an hour-long suite of epic proportions” – Chicago Tribune
“At times it was hard to know what to watch – the screen with its huge vision, or the orchestra with its feverish view of the technology of music. There were big musical moments, and the versatility of the players was such that sometimes that took precedence over everything.” -Philadelphia Inquirer
