The 1963 Jerry Lewis original - a comedy take-off on the Jekyll-and-Hyde story - screens on a double bill with THE PATSY (1964). THE NUTTY PROFESSOR is one of Lewis's best-known films, with Lewis in the dual role, which alternates his usual bumbling comic persona with sophisticated, seductive singer Buddy Love. (Some critics, notably Pauline Kael, have suggested Lewis was, in a sense, recreating the dynamic of his old films with Dean Martin, with Lewis playing both roles; Lewis denies basing the Buddy Love character on Martin.) Needless to say, this was the basis for the remake with Eddie Murphy, which put the emphasis on makeup and special effects. The original is still the one to see.
