The directors cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture has a long history. The film famously rushed to meet its theatrical release date in 1979, with the result that some key scenes were lost in the editing room. Yeas later, this footage was restored for network television broadcast, but the special effects had not been completed, resulting in soundstage rafters visible in outer space. Since then, the director’s edition was more carefully restored for home video release. Now, over a decade since the death of the film’s director, Robert Wise, the restored director’s version will be seen on the big screen “meticulously restored and remastered with enhanced visual effects.”
