Description: The Science and Technology Council of The Academy of Motion Pictures presents this event, hosted by writer-producer Damon Lindelof, who takes a look at the use of “pre-viz” effects.

Previsualization (previs) in the digital age is an evolving pre-production process that incorporates 3D animation tools and virtual environments, enabling filmmakers to fully explore their creative visions by creating visual references for complicated film shots and sequences long before production begins.

“Star Trek” producer Damon Lindelof will lead an evening using his film to demonstrate how innovations in previs are impacting the filmmaking process. “Star Trek” was Oscar-nominated for its visual effects, sound editing and sound mixing, and won for makeup.

“Visualize This” will feature a panel of “Star Trek” crew members who will discuss the challenges and opportunities that come with this technology-driven process. The program includes film clips and behind-the-scenes footage demonstrating how previs was used to shape several key scenes in the film.

In addition to producing “Star Trek,” Lindelof is producing and co-writing the forthcoming sequel. He also co-wrote the feature “Cowboys & Aliens,” directed by Jon Favreau, due to be released next year.

  • Senior Previsualization Supervisor David Dozoretz
  • Previsualization Supervisor Brian Pohl
  • Visual Effects Supervisor Roger Guyett
  • Production Designer Alex McDowell
  • Editors Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey
  • Production Executive Marc Evans
