Weekly Pics: Amalie & Mad Love

Some great love stories top our list of picks for this week – although, true to form, the love is in some cases twisted and bizarre.

MAD LOVE and EL. Director Karl Fruend’s 1935 reworking of HANDS OF ORLAC features Peter Lorre as a mad scientist who grafts the hands of a murderer onto the arms of an injured pianist – all part of a plot to win the piantist’s wife, who resembles a statue of Galatea that the scientist worships. EL is Luis Bunuel’s darkly comic 1953 exploration of romantic obsession and foot fetishism – not a horror film but bizarre enough to be of interest. This double bill is part of a Romantic Obsessions series screening on Fridays this month. Silent Movie Theatre – 611 N Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, 90036 / 323-655-2510 www.silentmovietheatre.com. Friday, February 13 at 8:00pm.

AMALIE. Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s 2001 romantic fantasy screens on a double bill with the 1964 classic UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG. You can read a review of the film here and an interview with the director here. New Beverly Cinema – 7165 Beverly Blvd – Los Angeles, CA 90036 – (323) 938-4038 www.newbevcinema.com. Friday and Saturday, February 13 & 14.
