American Cinematheque Horrorthon & More
Halloween 2024: This season’s screenings begin in September with such films as Videodrome, Nosferatu, Salem’s Lot, and The Babadook, followed by many others. Some titles are part of the annual Beyond Fest; others are part of the weekly Cinematic Void series. Other Halloween-themed screenings include The Black Cat (1934) on October 11 and the 19th annual Horrorthon on October 26.
American Cinematheque Halloween Screenings
The non-profit American Cinematheque offers a wide range of genres throughout the year, but the ratio of horror, fantasy, and science fiction goes way up during the Halloween season, beginning in September. There is always a patchwork of different presentations; programming typically includes themed series, such as Japanese Ghost Cats, Universal Classics, or International House of Horrors. Cinematic Void, which presents cult-classics all year, focuses on horror in October, usually offering classic with broad appeal. Beyond Fest, which mixes exploitation and action films horror, runs the last week of September and the first week of October. Cinematheque’s annual all-night Horrorthon takes place near the end of October. Usually, there will be a one-off screening on Halloween Night.
Note: Since recovering from the 2020 pandemic, American Cinematheque has resumed screenings at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, Los Feliz in Los Angeles, and the Egyptian in Hollywood, which has undergone renovations.

Tickets: $30 for members, $35 for non-members.
The all-night Horrorthon typically presents an eclectic mix of titles: classic, contemporary, and low-budget cult.

Beyond Fest Dates: September 25 – October 9
For two weeks in September and October, American Cinematheque hosts the annual Beyond Fest, which includes horror and exploitation titles both new and old, including premiers and guest appearances. This year’s titles include Salem’s Lot, The Babadook, Lake Mungo, Total Recall (1990) in 70mm, Hellboy, Terrifier 3, The Crow (1964), The Cell, V/H/S Beyond, an unrated cut of Saw, The Hidden, Godzilla Minus 1, Event Horizon, and a triple bill of Sam Raimi films with the director in person.

Cinematic Void: Every Tuesday
The weekly series presents cult films year-round. During September and Halloween, programming turns more toward horror. This year’s titles include Starry Eyes, An American Werewolf in London, The Amityville Horror, The Changeling, Creepshow, Spookies, Teen Wolf, The Velvet Vampire, and The Horror Star.
