Lecture: Japanese Art That Horrifies
Japanese Art That Horrifies is the fifth and final entry in the monthly Conversations on Japanese Art series at Japan Foundation Los Angeles, which promotes international “mutual understanding between Japan and the U.S. through cultural exchange.” Michael VanHartingsveldt (PhD candidate in Art History at the University of Kansas) discusses examples of Japanese art that provoke disturbing emotional responses. While including information about how the art was created and understood, the lecture encourages listeners to engage with “obscure Japanese concepts and art objects.”
Conversations on Japanese Art 5: Art that Horrifies (KOWAI art) takes place on Wednesday, October 30 from 7pm to 8:15pm. Admission is free, but registration is required. The Japanese Foundation is located in Suite 100 at 5700 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. Learn more here.
