Singing with Sweeney

Above: Sweeney Todd (Geoff Elliott) and Mrs. Lovett (Cassandra Marie Murphy) share some pie.

Last night we attended the sold-out show of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at Pasadena’s A Noise Within theatre. We will be back with a full review ASAP, but in the meantime we wanted to briefly mention that the show is wonderful, with the entire cast proving themselves capable of performing the vocal acrobatics required by Stephen Sondheim’s musical. Though we are not fully qualified to comment in depth on the melodic and harmonic complexities of the score, Sondheim takes the music to operatic heights that Andrew Lloyd Weber* never even dreams of; the difference is so profound one need not be an expert to hear it.

*We are not Weber-haters. We fully enjoyed The Phantom of the Opera when it was at the Pantages Theatre in 2019.
