Writer-director Christian Petzold’s film tells the story of Undine (Paula Beer), a women who informs the boyfriend who jilts her that she will have to kill him. Say what? Apparently, undines are water nymphs who revenge themselves upon faithless lovers. Is Undine really a mermaid in disguise, or is this just a metaphor for the heartbreak of a breakup?

IFC Films opens the fantasy-tinged film in art house theatres, including several Laemmle’s locations in Los Angeles, on June 4, 2021.
