Trolling for 3D Sharks?
We don’t mean to be taken seriously about this, but the above page from the Regal Cinemas website has us wondering whether the company is planning to punk its customers with the biggest troll ever perpetrated on the the ticket-buying public. You probably know that, starting on Thursday, Jaws (1975) is returning to theatres in IMAX and Digital 3D engagements.* But strictly speaking, the title listed here refers to the 1983 sequel, Jaws 3D. The film was part of a short-lived trend from the early 1980s, in which the third film in a franchise was shot in 3D because it fit the title so perfectly; other examples include Friday the 13th 3D and Amityville 3D.
In any case, Jaws 3D was a critical and commercial disappointment, which few people are eager to revisit, so we think it would be hysterically funny if Regal’s customers arrived in theatres, expecting to see the new 3D conversion of Jaws, but instead got the title for which they actually purchased tickets.
Footnote:
- Just to be clear: Jaws will screen in IMAX or 3D. Not in both formats.
