Unleash the Kraken! Tentacles at Monterey Bay Aquarium

Mythical Monsters mix with mollusks in this gripping art exhibit.

This one is a little bit outside of our jurisdiction, but the Tentacles exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium impinges upon the world of horror and fantasy in its early sections. Though mostly an educational tour – including images, information, and live specimens devoted to the cephalopod family (which the squid, the octopus, the cuttlefish, and the nautilus), Tentacles begins with artwork illustrating myths and legends of monstrous mollusks sinking ships, attacking humans, and destroying bridges – including a clip from Ray Harryhausen’s 1954 film IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA and a sketch by author H.P. Lovecraft of his own creation, the ancient, god-like monstrosity Great Cthulhu.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is located at 886 Cannery Row, Monterey, CA 93940. Visit their website for more info.
