Wicked Lit revamped for Halloween 2018

Unbound Productions has announced its plans for the 10th anniversary of the Wicked Lit Halloween Theatre Festival, which will include substantial alterations to the familiar format. Instead of three short plays, there will be only two, and there will be no pre-show performance acting as a wraparound to tie the plays together. This will result in a shorter run time of 75 minutes, allowing for two performances per night. This year, Wicked Lit will be staged entirely indoors at the Mountain View Mausoleum, with no outdoor excursions through the cemetery. There will be an exhibit of costumes and puppets from past years. Group sizes will be smaller, and ticket prices will be lower.

This year’s plays are The Chimes: A Goblin Story and Teig O’Kane and the Corpse. Adapted by Jonathan Josephson from Charles Dickens’ novella, The Chimes was previously seen during Wicked Lit’s first two seasons at Mountain View (2010 and 2011, pictured at top); the new production will be directed by  Darin Anthony. Teig O’Kane and the Corpse is a new play making its debut, adapted by Kerry Kazmierowicztrimm from the story by Ernest Rhys; Paul Millet will handle directorial duties. Millet and Josephson are founding members of Wicked Lit. Kazmierowicztrimm wrote last year’s wraparound, Liliom. Anthony directed Toth’s Labyrinth for Wicked Lit 2017.

At first glance, it sounds as though Wicked Lit is scaling back for Halloween 2018. With only two plays, the production seems to be approximately on the scale of 2015’s off-season “Summer Wicked Lit Installation,” featuring “The Monkey’s Paw” and “From Beyond” (reviewed here). Hopefully, compensation will come from the smaller audience size, which should increase the intimacy of Wicked Lit’s immersive productions.

Performances take place at starting at 7:30pm and 9:00pm, from October 4 through November 10 on these dates:

  • Thursday, October 4 (Preview)
  • Friday, October 5 (Opening Night)
